Red Panda Facts!

Red Pandas rome the Himalayan trees in countries such as China, Nepal and Bhutan. Their diet consists of 98% bamboo plus bugs and beetles. Althought the names sound alike red pandas aren't actually related to any type of panda! They spend 2/3 of their days sleeping and are part of the Ailuridae animal kingdom.

Funny Red Panda Qirks!

Some people call Red Pandas the ducks of the Himalayas because they quack and tweet like ducks! They also glow in the dark, the white fur on their faces and tummys is so bright in the dark that it looks like it glows. Red Pandas like to stand on their hind legs when feeling thretened or provoked. When the seasons get colder, instead of hibernating up high, they slowly move down the trees which they enhabit

There are fewer than 10,000 red pandas left in the wild. Popular and distinctive, known for their kitten-like faces and ruddy coats, red pandas are endangered with their numbers decreasing. Red Pandas are nocturnal animals so they don't interact with humans very much but when they have been known to communicate with people they are often aggressive except when bred in captivity. Did you know that Red Pandas are excellent swimmers even though they don't swim often.

There is an old folk tale about a Red Panda. It goes like this: On the night of a red moon, Sun Yee prayed to the gods to make her a red panda and give her the strength to protect her people – a prayer which the gods answered. By harnessing her emotions Sun Yee was able to transform into a massive red panda and protect her village and her family

The red Panda gets its name because of their long, bushy tails for balance and to cover themselves in winter, presumably for warmth. Primarily a herbivore, the name panda is said to come from the Nepali word 'ponya,' which means bamboo or plant eating animal

Red Pandas are all born female, males are only created if a female Red Panda gets a shock in the first 48 hours of their lives!
